Cheratussin AC is a combination of codeine and guaifnesin and is primarily used as a cough syrup. Codeine is a type of narcotic that helps to reduce coughing by affecting the brain signals that trigger the coughing action. Guaifnesin is an expectorant that helps to reduce congestion in the chest and throat. These two combined helps to relieve one from coughing and comes in handy when one has a cold or other illness.

While on the medication, avoid driving vehicles or operating heavy machinery. You should be fine if you take the recommended dosage but it is an important precaution.
