Cheratussin AC is a combination of codeine and guaifnesin and is primarily used as a cough syrup. Codeine is a type of narcotic that helps to reduce coughing by affecting the brain signals that trigger the coughing action. Guaifnesin is an expectorant that helps to reduce congestion in the chest and throat. These two combined helps to relieve one from coughing and comes in handy when one has a cold or other illness.
Before even touching Cheratussin AC or any other medicine, consult your doctor. There is nothing more reassuring than words from a doctor giving you the go ahead on a product. While on the medication, avoid driving vehicles or operating heavy machinery. You should be fine if you take the recommended dosage but it is an important precaution. Never let anyone else use your medication unless they have taken the necessary steps as well. Codeine can be very dangerous and become addicting especially if improper dosages are taken. Do not abuse the cough syrup an you’ll be okay.
Obviously, this medication should not be taken if you are allergic to Codeine or Guaifnesin. When talking to your doctor, tell him or her if you are affected by any of the following:
- Drug addiction
- Mental illness or depression
- Spine issues
- Stomach or intestine disorder
- Any brain injury history (concussion, tumour, etc)
- Breathing disorders
- And lastly, heart disease
